Grounded in the Six Shearing Layers concept inspired bySteward Brand, this project is a deliberate exploration ofclay’s application across various architectural layers—Site,Structure, Skin, Service, Space Plan, and Stuff. FollowingBrand’s premise that lower layers, such as Site, undergoslower changes than upper layers, the project leveragesthis dynamic to create a harmonious transformationthroughout. The central intellectual pursuit revolves around seamlesslyintegrating clay into each layer, presenting a compellingstrategy to diminish the carbon footprint associated withtraditional building processes. Notably, the design briefchallenges conventional norms by eliminating the relianceon ceramic tiles, opting instead for a combination ofrecycled tiles and pliable clay.In order to fully grasp clay’s potential, an extensive seriesof tests and experiments were meticulously conducted, spanning scales from 1:1 to 1:20. Beyond the technicalexploration, the project aims to communicate the intrinsicqualities of clay as the cornerstone in each layer, showcasing its adaptability and sustainability within thebuilt environment. The overarching objective remainsthe reduction of environmental impact, accentuatingclay’s eco-friendly attributes and its potential to redefineconstruction practices.

Working Process The culmination of rigorous experimentation with clay as a building material births a pavilion that transcends mere structural innovation. Inspired not only by the diverse
experiments on clay but also guided by the overarching principle of the Six Shearing Layers, this pavilion stands as a testament to the holistic integration of clay across each layer. A meticulous exploration of how clay can harmonize with site, structure, skin, service, space
plan, and stuff unfolds, leading to a pavilion constructed exclusively with clay materials. This architecture is not just a structure; it’s a living narrative, where the essence of clay converges with the profound impact of the Six Shearing Layers, creating a pavilion that resonates
with sustainability, adaptability, and the enduring beauty of thoughtful design. 1:200 Development Model
